I have added 3 new photos to my photos of Virginia's sky slideshow on the the front page! Now, to the post: I had the new nosecone design printed today, and it is very sturdy compared to the last one. The printer did do that plastic cobweb effect near the top of the nosecone, but that is the only thing wrong with it, so I continued on with it. Thanks to that effect, the tip was pretty fragile. I'm not sure how well it can survive a hit to the nose when it falls from the sky, but I have no choice but to move forward with this. To make it a little stronger, I started putting tape on the tip to bind all those "cobwebs" together where they are supposed to be. As I was applying the tape, I realized that tape would make a nice "skin" for the nosecone. This next picture is the result of that idea: I have yet to measure the mass of this thing, but I know the print used 160 grams of material. I'm not really sure how much mass the tape adds or how well the tape will hold together during a hit with the ground... It also has occurred to me that the tape is pretty ugly to look at. The next step is to print a cap that covers the hole on the top, and then put a piece of soft foam onto that cap so the top is aerodynamic also. Here is a picture of the cap model (upside down). It should be just big enough to snap into the hole at the top of the nosecone.
